When you open a course's gradebook, grid view displays by default. Use the toggle to switch to list view.

In addition to managing grades and submissions in the grid view or list view, you can search and filter the gradebook, configure gradebook settings, and review your action items.

Navigate the Grid view with a keyboard

Nearly every cell in the gradebook grid contains at least one interactive element, and many contain more than one. Here are some tips for navigating the grid view page with a keyboard.

  • Tab through the elements at the top of the page as expected. Select Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac) to select an element.

    • When you select the Filters button, the focus moves to the filters element itself. Tab through the filters as expected.

    • When you select To Do, a panel opens and the focus moves to the panel itself. Tab through each element as expected. Select Ctrl+Backspace (Windows) or Cmd+Backspace (Mac) to move focus to the panel's Close button (X).

    • When you select the Settings button, a panel opens and the focus moves to the heading. Tab through each element as expected. Select Ctrl+Backspace (Windows) or Cmd+Backspace (Mac) to move focus to the panel's Close button (X).

  • From the Settings button, the next tab moves focus into the Grades table. Tab again to move focus out of the Grades table to the next element on the page. Use the arrow keys to move between cells within the table. When you tab out of the table, Shift+Tab returns focus to the same cell you left.

The Name column

  • In the Name cell, select Enter (Windows), Return (Mac), or the space bar to sort the column by name.

  • In a student's cell, select Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac) to open the Student Overview page for that student. Select Ctrl+Backspace (Windows) or Cmd+Backspace (Mac) to move focus to the panel's Close button (X).

The Overall Grade column

  • In the Overall Grade cell, select Enter (Windows), Return (Mac), or the space bar to sort the column by overall grade.

  • To change a student's overall grade, select Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac) on that grade cell. Enter a grade, or select Tab to choose a grade from the list or select Undo Override.

Grade item columns

  • The cell that contains the name of each grade item has three interactive elements in it. Select the space bar to enter the cell, then use the arrow keys to navigate between the elements.

    • Select the grade column name to open the Assessment Details panel on the right side of the screen. Focus moves to the panel heading. Navigate through the panel as expected. Use the left and right arrows at the top of the panel to move to the next or previous grade item. Closing the panel returns focus to the Grades table cell for the current grade item.

    • Select the arrows next to the name of the grade column to sort the grid by that column's grades.

    • Select the purple plus sign to open the Add Item menu.

  • The cell below the grade item name can have one or two interactive elements: the Needs Grading button and the Post Grades button. Post Grades isn't visible if there are no grades to post. Select the space bar to enter the cell, the use the arrow keys to navigate between the elements.

    • Select the Needs Grading button to open the Submissions view, filtered to Needs Grading, for that item. Select Ctrl+Backspace (Windows) or Cmd+Backspace (Mac) to move focus to the panel's Close button (X).

    • Select the Post Grades button to post grades. A confirmation dialog opens. Tab through the dialog as expected.

  • Below the Needs Grading and Post Grades buttons is an Edit Column cell, which appears only when it has focus. Select this button to edit the values of each cell in the column.

    • Enter the value for each cell and select Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac) to move down to the next cell. There is no confirmation dialog for scores changes, and there is no undo.

    • When you have finished entering scores, use the arrow keys to return to the Edit Column cell, now showing a checkmark button. Select the checkmark to close editing mode.

  • Select a grade item cell for a specific student to open the Grade Details panel for that student.

    • The focus moves to the panel heading. Tab through the panel as expected.

    • Use the up and down arrows at the top of the panel to move between students for the same grade item.

    • Use the left and right arrows at the top of the panel to move between grade items for the same student.

    • Closing the panel returns focus to the Grades table cell for the current student and grade item.
