Use these checklists to prepare your Blackboard LMS course before students begin participating in your course.

Required set up for instructors
These steps are required for students to access your course content and submit work.
Instructor account basics
Populate and review your profile: Make sure name, profile image, and selected personal information display correctly to students.
Manage notification settings so you receive alerts for submissions and messages.
Course setup
Open Course Settings and keep the course Closed while building.
Confirm Course Access and Course Duration settings are correct within Course Settings.
Confirm Messages are enabled for student questions if your course uses them. Institutions may turn this feature off at the global level.
Copy or import your existing course (if applicable)
Complete these steps to bring content into your course before reviewing and cleaning it up.

Keep the destination course Closed while copying or importing content to avoid exposing incomplete materials to students.
Identify the source course (another Blackboard LMS course, a preview Blackboard LMS account, or another LMS).
Confirm you have instructor-level access to the source course.

All course content
Selected content only
Assessments and Gradebook items
Rubrics and question banks
Begin the course copy or import process from the destination your new course.
Wait for the copy or import to complete before making edits.
Avoid editing content while the copy is still in progress.
Confirm that copied content appears in the Course Content area.
Course structure and content
Course content items can also be added once the course is opened to students.
Add your course overview or syllabus.
Create a course structure to organize content into modules or folders with consistent naming.
Add core learning content (documents, files, links, media).
Add required assessments (assignments, tests, discussions).
Set due dates and availability for all graded items.
Gradebook set up
Gradebook can also be set up or revised once the course is opened to students.
Verify Gradebook schema (points, weighted categories, or other institutional defaults).
Confirm all graded items appear correctly in the Gradebook.
Verify point values, categories, and calculations.
Review accessibility guidelines and features
Making your course more accessible makes your course better. Review your institution's accessibility requirements if they exist.
Review before release
Use Student Preview to navigate the course as a student.
Confirm content visibility, submission workflows, and grade visibility.
Copied or imported course cleanup (if applicable)
Update dates, instructor information, and policies.
Remove outdated announcements and unused content.
Recheck links, embedded files, and media permissions.
Re-run Student Preview after cleanup.
Update dates, instructor information, and policies.
Open course for students
Open Course Settings and change the course from Closed to Open.
Recommended options for course set up
These steps improve clarity, engagement, and reduce student questions but are not strictly required.
Course appearance and organization
Add a course banner to visually identify the course.
Hide unfinished or future content instead of deleting it.
Calendar and scheduling
Review the Course Calendar for accuracy.
Add manual events (office hours, live sessions, exams).
Confirm time zone alignment.
Communication setup
Post or schedule a welcome announcement . Consider embedding a video recording of yourself in your announcement using Video Studio.
If the Discussions tool is used in the course, create a starter discussion prompt such as "Introduce Yourself"
Assessment enhancements
Add rubrics to assignments and discussions.
Review assessment settings (attempts, visibility, accommodations).
Confirm feedback options (inline comments, overall feedback).
