Multiple Answer Questions

Create a multiple choice or multiple answer question

Multiple choice and multiple answer questions are graded automatically. If an assessment only has these types of questions, the assessment scores are posted automatically for students to view.

Note

You'll use the same process to create questions in tests and assignments.

Add multiple answer question

To create multiple answer questions, use the multiple choice question type and choose multiple correct answers. You can allow partial credit and negative credit for an answer. You can also set how many answers students are allowed to select.

New questions start with four answer options by default. You must select at least one correct answer and add text for all answer choices before saving.

Questions have a default value of 10 points, but you can select the points box to enter a different value.

To add more answer boxes, select Add Option. You can change the order of answers and delete them as needed.

Set how many answers students can select

You can define the maximum number of answers a student is allowed to select for each question.

  • The default selection limit is one answer.

  • If you add more answer choices, the selection limit stays at one unless you update the number of options that students can select.

This setting determines how the question behaves for students:

  • If students can select only one answer, the question uses radio buttons.

  • If students can select more than one answer, the question uses checkboxes.

Partial and negative credit

You can allow partial and negative credit for multiple choice questions to award students who have partial understanding and foster a positive learning experience.

From a multiple choice question, enter your answers and select the correct ones. Then select Allow partial and negative credit.

  • You can enter any partial credit value for each option within a range of –100% to +100%. The sum of all of the correct answers does not need to equal 100%.

  • To subtract points for an incorrect answer, enter a negative percentage value.

  • To allow a negative overall score for the question, select Allow overall negative score.

You can enter partial or negative credit. The sums of the credit does not need to equal 100%.
