Glossary of Course Catalog Terms

Term

Definition

Brand

A distinct set of colors and graphics you can create for your Course Catalog environment to be displayed to different users based on role or node.

Category

A distinct classification to which a course belongs.

Certificate

An award, provided in PDF format, to learners based on attendance, achievement, or any other user-defined tag. More than one certificate can be awarded for a single offering. Certificates are optional.

Certificate and Progress Assigner

A user that can assign progress and certificates to offerings in Course Catalog.

Certificate Authenticity

The ability for learners to generate an authenticity link that is publicly accessible and will display their certificates along with the generated dates and validity dates.

Certificate Template Manager

A user that can create, edit, delete, and view certificate templates and map form fields to desired fields in the Blackboard LMS or generated data.

Course

A collection of related materials packaged to be delivered in multiple modalities and formats.

Course Catalog

The listing of all courses and offerings available in which learners can be enrolled.

Course Manager

A user that can create, edit, delete, and view courses used to create offerings. Optionally, course managers can associate courses with approved instructors.

Dashboard

A learner's page within the catalog containing information on the learner's current, past, and future offerings, available and earned certificates, and course progress.

Face-to-Face Course

A course that is taught in person at a specific time and place and does not have an online component.

Hybrid Course

A course that has both a face-to-face and an online component.

Instructor

A user who has been assigned to teach or facilitate an offering. An instructor’s account must be created prior to developing the offering.

Instructor Manager

A user that can create and update approved instructor accounts to be associated with courses and offerings.

Learner

A user who can perform actions such as enrolling in and completing courses, printing certificates, and viewing progress.

Managed Enrollment

An enrollment that allows learners to enroll in a course without granting them access to it until an instructor or administrator manually approves them.

Offering

An instance of a course created each time the course is offered. A course, instructor, and certificate, if any certificate is required, are associated with the offering.

Offering Manager

A user that can create, edit, delete, and view offerings of predefined courses. Optionally, offering managers can assign instructors, certificates, and payments.

Online Asynchronous Course

Online asynchronous courses are delivered online, and the instructor and the students in the course all engage with the course content at different times and from different locations.

Online Synchronous Course

Online synchronous courses are delivered online, and the instructor and the students engage with the course content and each other simultaneously but from different locations.

Payment Code

A code used to discount items based on users, courses, or timeframe, used by learners and designed to apply as a specific amount or a percentage of the total cost.

Payment Gateway

An interface that allows learners to pay for premium content through a configured Payment Service Provider (PSP) through Course Catalog.

Payment Service Provider

A third-party company that allows Course Catalog to accept payments through the Course Catalog interface.

Program

A group of two or more courses connected as prerequisites or corequisites. Completion of these courses culminates in the completion of the Program.

Program Manager

A user that can create, edit, delete, and view programs of study and create associations between courses such that the courses are prerequisites or corequisites. Two or more courses are included in a program.

Self account Creation

The ability for users to create their own accounts in Course Catalog.

Self-enrollment

The ability for learners to enroll themselves in the courses they want to take.

Student Information System (SIS)

A centralized student record system that manages all student data.

Tag

A descriptive tag that is attached to a course and allows filtering searches based on that tag.

TDM Admin

A user that can configure general catalog settings, homepage settings, categories, tags, and requirements.

UWM Admin

A user that will have access to the UWM administration.
