Participate in Discussions with JAWS

Discussions are always links in course content. Once you are in a discussion, navigate through header 2 and header 3 levels with the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys.

  • Press H to cycle through the headers.

OR

  • Press Insert + F6 to call the headers menu.

Header level 2 will always be the top and is called Discussion Topic. To find the description of the discussion, press the Down Arrow key from Discussion Topic. Header level 3 will always be the name of the person associated with an individual contribution in a discussion.

Make an initial post

To make your first post in a discussion topic:

  1. From the header level 2 Discussion Topic, press the Down Arrow key until you enter "Forms Mode," just past the description of the discussion. You will hear a boop up sound to indicate you are in forms mode.

  2. Type your discussion post.

  3. Press Tab until you hear the screen reader say Post (currently, this is three Tab presses).

  4. Press Enter.

Reply to an individual

The name of everyone that has posted in a discussion is a header level 3. To reply to an individual:

  1. Press Insert + F6 to call the headers menu.

  2. Press the Down Arrow to find the person's name.

  3. Press Enter.

  4. Press the Down Arrow to read what they have shared until you reach the reply button.

  5. Press Enter to go into "Forms Mode" to type a reply.

  6. Press Tab until you hear the screen reader say Reply (currently, this is three Tab presses).

  7. Press Enter.

Return to course content

When you have finished interacting with a discussion, to return to course content:

  1. Press Control + Insert + B.

  2. Press the Down Arrow to the Close button.

  3. Press Enter twice.
