How the Mean is Calculated

A mean is the sum of a collection of numbers divided by the number of numbers in the collection.

A mean in the Evaluate platform is calculated using the Scale Values of the responses, which are assigned when the evaluation is created. A common example is a likert scale question such as:

  • Strongly Agree

  • Agree

  • Neutral

  • Disagree

  • Strongly Disagree

  • "The course assignments were clear."

The scale values for these responses would be 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, with Strongly Agree being 5 and Strongly Disagree being 1. These values are in a Descending order. Based on these values assigned, the mean is then calculated.
